Research question
How much outreach capability can a small nonprofit team actually operate — and what does software look like when it respects that limit?
Product outcome
A campaign platform where a small team can run organized, multi-channel outreach without a dedicated operations person.
Research focus
Public-interest technology, organizational coordination, communication automation, and accessible custom software.

The problem

Small nonprofits run on outreach — donors, volunteers, program participants — but the tooling assumes either a spreadsheet or an enterprise marketing suite. The spreadsheet cannot coordinate a campaign; the suite requires an operations specialist the organization does not have. The result is outreach that happens in bursts, in inboxes, with no memory between campaigns.

The research question

How much outreach capability can a two-or-three-person team actually operate? Most communication software fails nonprofits not by lacking features but by assuming attention, staffing, and training that do not exist. The design question is one of fit: what is the largest useful system that remains fully operable by a small, busy, non-technical team?

Why existing approaches are insufficient

General-purpose marketing platforms are priced and designed for growth teams. Their power sits behind concepts — segments, journeys, attribution — that make sense to marketers, not to a program director sending a volunteer callout between site visits. Nonprofit-specific CRMs handle donor records well but treat multi-channel outreach as an afterthought or an add-on.

The product

A platform where contacts, templates, and campaigns live in one place: organize people into meaningful groups, write a message once as a reusable template, send it as email or text, and let automated sequences handle the follow-ups. Reporting shows what a small team actually needs to know — who was reached, who responded, what is scheduled next.

Development status

This platform is in active development as client and public-interest work. The capability list above is the build plan for the initial release; we will mark capabilities as shipped when they are in real use, not before. Nonprofits interested in piloting the platform can reach out here.

What this project demonstrates

This is DataKnife’s client-facing craft in plain view: scoping software to the real operating capacity of its users, building communication and automation systems, and delivering custom product work for organizations that are not technology companies.
